10 TO 12 CMS LONG LEAF WARBLER.MALE WEIGHS 7 TO 8 GMS AND FEMALE 6 TO 7 GMS.HAS BROWN WASHED DULL GREEN UPPER PARTS AND OFF-WHITE UNDERPARTS BECOMING YELLOWISH ON FLANKS AND A SHORT WHITE SUPERCILIUM.IT HAS DARK LEGS AND A FINE DARK BILL AND A SHORT PRIMARY PROJECTION.NEWLY FLEDGED JUVENILE IS BROWNER ABOVE THAN THE ADULT WITH YELLOW WHITE UNDERPARTS.AFTER MOULTING BOTH THE ADULT AND THE JUVENILE HAVE BRIGHTER AND GREENER UPPER PARTS AND A PALER SUPERCILIUM.IT HAS ROUNDED WINGS IN FLIGHT AND A DIAGNOSTIC TAIL MOVEMENT CONSISTING OF A DIP,THEN SIDEWARDS WAG, THAT DISTINGUISHES IT FROM OTHER SPECIES. IT IS MIGRATORY BUT IT IS ONE OF THE FIRST PASSERINE BIRDS TO RETURN TO ITS BREEDING AREAS IN SPRING AND AMONG THE LAST TO LEAVE IN THE LATE AUTUMN.WHEN BREEDING ,IT IS A BIRD OF OPEN WOODLANDS WITH SOME TALLER TREES AND GROUND COVER FOR NESTING PURPOSIS.IN WINTER IT CHOOSES WIDER RANGE OF HABITATS INCLUDING SCRUB AND IS NOT DEPENDENT UPON TREES.IT IS OFTEN FOUND NEAR WATER.IT IS INSECTIVOROUS MOVING RESTLESSLY THROUGH FOLIAGE OR BRIEFLY HOVERING.IT TAKES INSECTS MAINLY FLIES,EGGS AND LARVAES OF BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS.IT REQUIRES ABOUT ONE-THIRD OF ITS WEIGHT IN INSECTS DAILY,IT FEEDS ALMOST CONTINUOUSLY IN THE AUTUMN TO PUT ON EXTRA FAT AS FUEL FOR LONG MIGRATION FLIGHT.
